The International Fair is in honor of Thinking Day, celebrated every February 22nd. It is a tradition where Girl Scouts and Girl Guides all over the world take a moment to send mental messages of friendship to their sister Girl Scouts. Thinking Day is the birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouting, and his wife, Lady Baden-Powell, who was World Chief Guide of the Girl Guide/Girl Scout movement.
Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouting in the United States, believed it was very important that Girl Scouts be aware of their membership in the worldwide movement. Upon her death, the Juliette Low Friendship Fund was started to help Girl Scouts and Girl Guides participate in international exchanges and wider opportunities (now called Destinations).
Every year at the fair, committee members hand out Destination Scholarships to each Girl Scout going on GSNENY destinations that year. Your donation to the Juliette Low Friendship Fund allows these scholarships to be awarded! The fair committee also donates a generous amount to the fund from profits generated by the fair.
Our goal is to have a fun, educational International Fair and to emphasize Girl Scouting as a worldwide experience. Girl Scouts are able to sample different foods from around the world and learn about different cultures and customs.
